Butterfly Lifecycle - Growth, Changes and Metamorphosis

This is a black and white diagram of the butterfly lifecycle, featuring the Wanderer or Monarch butterfly, a butterfly which is probably identifiable no matter where you're based.

This will work with units on lifecycles, insects or animal studies, changes, seasons or nature observation.

The sheet is quick to colour in. Students will be able to research the markings of the adult butterfly and caterpillar stages and fill them in.

It is provided in png format so it can be easily resized and used as a poster or kept in worksheet size.

This is for sale for $2.00, downloadable from https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Butterfly-Lifecycle-Growth-Changes-and-Metamorphosis-1990407.

Parts of a Butterfly - Insects

This is a fun and hands on learning activity that doesn't require real butterflies (; It's bright and interesting and the tactile element keeps it relevant to the natural world.

 This package contains:
* a labelled diagram, showing the main parts of the butterfly and the functions of those parts;
* a fun tactile activity where students can label cut-out butterflies; and
* a page where students can label the parts, to check that they have understood the activity.

This would suit units in biology, particularly anatomy or topics on insects.

The activity can be laminated to re-use. Students may also like to colour the diagrams to assist learning.

Everyday Object Flashcards for TESOL/ ESL, Early learners and Language Classes

There are really boring ways to learn vocabulary in your own or other languages, but hopefully this isn't one.
These are flashcards showing everyday objects and the word for them, BUT (and this is the cool part), they come in sets of three: one card shows the picture with the object, another shows just the picture and another shows just the word. So, after teaching the vocabulary with the handy picture, you can then test people using either the pictures or words (I recommend a game of pictionary), or let them pair them up in memory, snap or fish ('Have you got something to use in the bathroom?'). If you have to learn a lot of new words, why be boring?

I can't recommend these sorts of flashcards enough for ESL/ TESOL teachers teaching beginner or early intermediate students. They can be used in other ways too, to prompt conversations without  talking too much yourself (Teacher Talking Time), to create scenarios or roleplays such as grocery shopping, homestays or staying at a hotel, (Excuse me please, could I please get a clean towel?'), as a stimulus for describing things or expressing likes and dislikes. They make a bright and interesting addition to lots of lessons.

The set is available online at https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Everyday-Objects-Flashcards-ESL-Beginners-LOTE-and-Literacy-2370229 for only $2.00.

Christmas Fun

It gets so exciting coming up to Christmas. Why not decorate your worksheets, homework sheets, classroom, bulletin board or smartboard which Christmas themed decorations? Christmas border are only $2.00 for digital downloading and are available at:
https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Christmas-Borders-New-2239931
This is also great for ESL/ TESOL teachers working overseas where there aren't a lot of Christmas decorations available.

I've also created some Christmas gift tags to digitally download. It can get expensive buying gift tags for presents for students, especially if you have a large class or work across many classrooms. So this way, pay once and reprint them as often as you need: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Christmas-Gift-Tags-2198974 for only $1.25.

Lastly, here is a hand drawn Christmas tree, decorations and presents to colour and decorate the tree with: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Decorate-the-Tree-Christmas-Fun-2229893 for only $1.25 that should keep everyone happy and quiet (:

Letter Combination (Phonics) Flashcards (ph, sh, th, ch, wh, gh)

Copyright 2015 Meg. English

This is a set of 36 flashcards with bright, fun, hand-drawn images.

They show the consonant combinations that many students have problems with - sh, th, ph, wh, gh and ch (letter combinations using 'h'). This is because adding an 'h' can suddenly change the whole sound, for example from 's' to 'sh'.

Each letter combination has 1 or 2 words. Each word has a card showing just the images, a card with the word for that image and a card showing the target letters.

The cards create a visual aid for the target letter combinations. The word is given to assist with sight learning and the target is drawn out to help students understand which letter combination is associated with that sound.

These can be used as prompts, in memory games, snap or in matching activities, for example:
* letter combination (e.g. 'ch') and image (e.g. 'cheese');
* letter combination (e.g. 'ch') and word (e.g. 'cheese');
* image and word;
* image to prompt word;
* image to prompt letter combination 'ch'.

These will teach the students to scan for these combinations, read the word by sight and associate the image with the sound (phonic association).

These are designed for young learners or ESL learners and can be found at https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Letter-Combination-Phonics-Flashcards-ph-sh-th-ch-wh-gh-2111239

Relexive Pronouns (-self and -selves)

The type of construction 'I saw myself' or 'They washed themselves' is quite a strange one to many speakers of other languages and can even be confusing to young native speaker 'He washed heself'. For teachers it can be a difficult lesson to make interesting to to give examples for.

Copyright 2015 and 2016 Meg. English
This is a set with a complete lesson on reflexive pronouns (myself, yourself, himself, herself etc) including two sets of flashcards - fun cartoon hands to use as prompts as well as paired cards with the reflexive and the corresponding pronoun (e.g he - himself, she - herself). The paired cards can also be used in pairing games (e.g. memory or snap), in pairing exercises or as prompts.

The lesson includes explanations of the grammar, examples, spoken exercise and instructions on how to use the flashcards. It is a very direct, to-the-point lesson which suits shorter lesson times (less than an hour).

The lesson can be found at my tpt store for only $2.00:
https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Reflexive-Pronouns-self-and-selves-No-Prep-Lesson-Flashcards-2109451

This makes a good lesson in itself, but can also be used as a display lesson or to advertise ESL classes. Through the lesson, you will be able to assess the skill level of new students.

This is based on a lesson I taught quite frequently and is a great lesson for building confidence as the target structure can be picked up quite easily for intermediate students. This means that students can focus on extending speaking skills.

Flashcards for Learning Time

These are the flashcards I have spoken about earlier to help kids learn time, particularly to make that crossover from digital to analogue time. The cards are paired with one digital and one analogue time. Each set gets more complex (o'clock, half past, minutes then 24 hour time).

Kids can pair the cards, alone or in groups (lay one type of time out on the table so they can choose a match), play memory, play snap, play bingo or draw/ write the time using the cards as cues.

Each set sells for $2.00.

Three Clocks for Learning Time - for Hours, Minutes and Phrases

Copyright 2015 Meg. English
One of my children was still really struggling to tell time long after I thought it would be an issue for her. I figure that much of the difficulty for children is in the different ways we talk about time, from '10 past' to 'o'clock', '8:35' to 'quarter to'.

The idea of these clocks is to separate these different descriptions of time. With the first clock, they can just learn o'clock and half past. Then children can estimate the time only looking at the little hand and seeing whether it is on a number, or closer to one number or the next. the next clock shows the minutes, going up by 5, and the last divides the clock more like a pie, into quarters and halves. This is the more verbal way of relaying time for children who are more exposed to digital time.

These clocks are available here https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Three-Clocks-for-Learning-Time-Tactile-Fun-2084544 for only $2.00.

You can print one clock per child, laminate them (to reuse), attach the hands with a butterfly pin and then the children can practise actually moving the hands to make each time you say or write.

Please also have a look out for my time Flashcards which pair analogue and digital time flashcards for pairing exercises and games. There are four sets, featuring hours, half past, minutes and 24-hour time, so they can be paced to be progressively more difficult.

Nacho and Bob - Fractions - NO PREP Self-directed Learning with Answers

 This is a complete, 48 page chapter on Fractions, including answers and a chapter review test.

It is designed for self-paced learning, for home schooling, for gifted and talented students needing extension work or for struggling students needing a review that they can work through at their own pace.

It begins with fraction basics, through simplifying fractions, converting mixed fractions and improper fractions, addition and subtraction of fractions as well as multiplication and division of fractions.

The answers are provided - you can either take them out to mark your students' progress or leave it to them to self- assess.

In addition, a number of fraction resources are included - a table of basic fractions, a multiplication grid, a pizza to cut and experiment with as well as chocolate cake graphics showing different fractions. This adds a tactile element to the chapter.

The chapter features two fun characters - Nacho and Bob - who guide the students through the exercises, make suggestions and make jokes. The idea is to make learning fun!

There are practice tables at the end of each section. These guide students through the different processes step by step, with many examples given.

The chapter is provided as a pdf for ease of printing. You may like to laminate the resources for reuse and keep a few copies in plastic sleeves to hand out as needed.

The Hamburger Hut - Tactile Lesson to Target Spoken Skills

The Make-Your-Own Hamburger Hut, gives your students have the opportunity to make their own hamburgers out of the ingredients given. You get all the pieces separately and can put together your own hamburgers, as you like them (or ask someone else to, in order to get confidence in ordering, expressing opinions and asking questions).

It's great for both ESL / TESOL learners and early learners. You can cut out and laminate the pieces so that they can be reused again and again. It really engages students in a physical task. They can also be put onto a smartboard and moved around.

Copyright 2015 Meg. English
This can used to teach all sorts of lessons:

* Expressing likes and dislikes (’I like cheese’, ‘I don’t like beetroot on my hamburger’);
* Expressing opinion  (‘I don’t think it is right to eat meat’ ‘I think egg on hamburgers is weird’);
* Food vocabulary (lettuce, tomatoes, cheese etc);
* Asking questions  (‘Do you like cheese?’ ‘Would you like mustard on your hamburger?’);
* Colours;
* Discussion of cultural differences and food preferences;
* Countable and uncountable nouns (much vs many) (‘I don’t like much mustard’ ‘I only want a few pickles’);
* Prepositions of place (under, over, on top of, on etc) ;
* Superlatives and comparatives (bigger than, the biggest etc); and
* Ordering food target language (‘I would like..’ ‘Can I please have…’ etc).

Students can do the activities all together or can break into groups. Consider having one student taking orders, one making the hamburgers and other people ordering (then swap)! (:

They have been hand-drawn in a fun cartoon style to make them more appealing. And yes, I am Australian, so I have included pineapple and beetroot, but that's something else you can discuss with your students! (;

I had a lot of fun with its prototype with ESL students in Japan. There were lots of giggles and more importantly, something to bring out those confident speaking skills.

Let's Grow - Postive Behaviour Reinforcement and Reward

 This is a positive feedback tool for preschoolers and early primary students, which also doubles as a bright and cheerful classroom decoration! It is a reward and acknowledgement concept for when students display behaviours that you would like to encourage or reward, (such as kindness, sharing, consideration, patience, turn-taking or helping etc).

I thought of it because I don't know about you, but I find a lot of kids get a bit bored with charts. Many of them have them at home and they often outgrow them. Also, charts are often designed to reward set behaviours where children can display amazing behaviours through the day that we really should acknowledge and encourage, like helping a friend who was hurt, sharing their pencils, saying something kind or taking care of a new student etc. This is also good for higher order learning, such as understanding that there are many points of view in the world or showing great time management. This is intended to capture those moments so are as individual as each child. At the end, each child has a personal memento and something to take home and put in their room with pride.

It works on the 'catch them being good' idea rather than just giving consequences to inappropriate behaviour. It also openly acknowledges those quiet achievers who may not feel they are getting the same attention as more disruptive students. Moreover, it is a resource that is focused completely on behaviour rather than academic achievement, which means it is inclusive and useful for all students.

Let's Grow starts as a fun and cheerful craft activity. When it is put up in the classroom, students can take pride in their artwork as well as their positive behaviours. They have a sense of ownership over its progress as well as being able to work towards a obtainable, behaviour-based goal.

Depending on how many you make, this activity can last a few days up to a term.

At the end of this activity, you can show your students how everyone looking after each other makes the world a more beautiful place to live in!

Includes templates (fully coloured, blank and semi-coloured, depending on your needs) and instructions. Equipment needed: paper to print out onto, coloured pencils/ markers/ paint, glue, scissors and tape/ adhesive putty. To save time, you could also use patty cases to make the bright flowers, especially with one smaller one inside a bigger one.

Preposition of Place Flashcards

These are fun cards to teach where things are. The set has 9 flashcards showing prepositions of place (on, under, behind, next to, in front of, in, out and around).

Each card has a cute illustration showing the target preposition, the word by itself and a sentence describing the scene.

These can be used for younger students or as an ESL (TESOL) resource. It is an especially good resource for reading recovery.

Flashcards are a fun and engaging way to teach. The pictures involve the students in looking at and describing the scene and the language targets are broken down into an easy to understand format. They also brighten up your classroom, and are useful in language assessments or display lessons.

I made myself a handrawn version of these when I was teaching TESOL many years ago. I found that they were a good way to really see where a younger student was at, as I could test vocabulary and sentence structure using the images only (written and all verbal), without using a written test (much more fun, age appropriate and far less scary). As few children knew all of the prepositions, you could uncover the writing and go through the sentences with them. This way they picked up something quickly so had a sense of achievement. The students were engaged and the parents felt like it was worthwhile (: In this way, you can engage speaking skills along with written skills, rather than secondary to them.

Pizza Clip Art

Well, the most engaging (and relatable) way I could think of to teach fractions to early learners was to set up a Pizzeria!

Here are some ideas for using this resource:
1.  Print out one pizza per student and get them to cut it up into ever smaller fractions to feed more people (e.g. halves, quarters and eighths or halves and sixths etc);

2. Ask students to roleplay the pizza maker and the customer. The customer has to tell the pizza maker how many people want a piece (if you can source or make pizza boxes, this one really comes to life!);

3. Ask the students to cut out (smaller) pizzas into set fractions (e.g. thirds, quarters, fifths etc). Ask them to  paste them onto cardboard, slightly separated and label the fractions. Then ask the students to write how many pieces that made.

As well as this, you can use the images to advertise fundraisers for your school such as pizza days or harmony days.

The images provided are resizeable so you can make your pizzas as small or as big as you like. (:

This sells for only $1.00 and you can find it at https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Pizza-Clip-Art-for-Fractions-Fundraising-and-Play-1774622

A Piece of Cake

Copyright 2015 Meg. English
This is a set of resources designed to make teaching fractions not only more fun and tactile, but also to make the idea more relatable to everyday events.

The main part of this pack is the images of cake in different fractions (halves, thirds, quarters, fifths and sixths). The images are resizeable, so the kids can cut their cakes up and understand how many pieces they need to feed a set number of friends etc. This gives lessons on fractions a more tactile element. They could even set up a cafe!

There are also resizeable images of a whole cake, a piece of cake and a cut cake to help explain the idea, to use in resources or to use in games and roleplaying.
Copyright Meg English 2015

I've also included 3 worksheets to get the ball rolling. They should make learning basic fractions a piece of cake (;
